Mechanism(s) controlling sorption of neutral organic contaminants by surfactant-derived and natural organic matter
Article Abstract:
Multiple mechanisms control the sorption of aqueous-phase neutral organic contaminants (NOCs) on organoclays including solvation of the cationic ammonium centers, the alkyl chains of hexadecyltrimethylammonium and the mineral surfaces and solute partitioning. On the other hand, solute partitioning seems to be the sole mechanism for the sorption of aqueous-phase NOCs by natural soil organic matter. Multiple sorptive mechanisms for organoclays and the greater solvency of their organic phases explain the significantly higher organic contaminant sorption by the surfactant-derived organic matter of organoclays than by natural soil organic matter.

Cationic surfactant sorption to a vermiculitic subsoil via hydrophobic bonding
Article Abstract:
The adsorption and desorption of the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) in a subsoil was examined to understand the behavior of surfactant-soil complexes as a function of HDTMA retention mechanisms. The results revealed that adsorption at low HDTMA concentration was due to cation exchange, which causes extensive clay aggregation. At higher HDTMA concentration, adsorption occurred due to cation exchange and hydrophobic bonding, which promotes clay dispersion when HDTMA equilibrium concentration reaches critical micelle concentration. HDTMA adsorption is also affected by cation type and electrolyte type and concentration.

Sorption of nonionic organic compounds in soil-water systems containing petroleum sulfonate-oil surfactants
Article Abstract:
A study has investigated the sorption of nonionic organic contaminants (NOCs) in a soil-water system using petroleum sulfonate-oil surfactants (PSOs). PSOs enhance the solubility of NOCs. The effect of PSO surfactants on NOCs, napthalene, phenanthrene and 2,2',4,4',5, 5'-hexachlorobiphenyl was evaluated. Results suggest the usefulness of petronate surfactants in enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble contaminants.
