Mechanistic aspects of the de novo synthesis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans in fly ash from experiments using isotopically labeled reagents
Article Abstract:
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) labeled with 13C is produced from the reaction of carbon-activated carbon with fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators at a temperature ranging from 300-350 degrees centrigrade. Studies showed that precursor elements including carbon, chlorine, hydrogen and oxygen must always be present to promote de novo synthesis of 13C PCDD/F. Other products of the reaction are aromatic carbon species, which results from aromatic structures are split from the solid carbon matrix.

Wet and dry deposition of chlorinated dioxins and furans
Article Abstract:
The wet and dry deposition processes were studied to analyze how the toxic compounds of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) behave in the environment. Decreases in temperature led to increases in dry deposition fluxes and increases in the level of PCDD/F that was particulate scavenged by rain. The removal of atmospheric PCDD/F was facilitated by both wet and dry deposition. Differences in the profile of PCDD/F from source to sink were influenced by both atmospheric degradation and deposition.

Estimating the atmospheric deposition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from soils
Article Abstract:
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) in soil samples were analyzed to determine if soil acts as a matrix for the collection of atmospheric deposition. The results showed that a substantial amount of the PCDD and PCDF load was in the top 15 cm. of the core. This indicated that soils can be used for estimating the deposition of PCDD and PCDF from the atmosphere.
