Midwestern states balk at Nox reductions in EPA's ozone plan
Article Abstract:
Several midwestern and southeastern states do not agree with the nitrous oxide (NOx) emission caps being proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA calls for 1.6 bil tons reduction in NOx emission by 2005. The states, which are bound to make the largest NOx reductions, argue that the EPA's proposed reductions are not supported by regional air quality modeling from the Ozone Transport Assessment Group (OTAG). The OTAG is a two-year assessment of regional ozone problem in the eastern US, where most of the midwestern states have participated.

NRC advises long-term particulate matter research plan needed
Article Abstract:
The National Research Council (NRC) has asked the EPA for a long-term research plan for particulate matter (PM). Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter, the first of four such reports by the NRC on EPA's research regarding PM, was released on Mar. 31, 1998 at the request of Congress. The NRC said that the program should provide the answer to such questions as which component of PM is the most biologically important and what mechanics make it significant for human health considerations.
