Missile Defense Rides Again
Article Abstract:
A test of a US anti ballistic missile defense system is scheduled for July, 1999. Concern over the US's ability to defend itself from a missile attack has prompted nuclear defense spending to increase to over 6 billion dollars. However, there is international concern that the US would have the capability to launch a strike against another nation and then defend itself from reprisals.

Sharp Drop Seen in Soil Erosion Rates
Article Abstract:
Soil environmentalists suggested that farming practices lead to massive soil erosion. Topsoil was thought to wash into rivers and streams at the same rate today as it did during the 1930s Dust Bowl days. Researchers at the Institute of the Environment at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that erosion rates run much lower than estimated.

Common Ground for Fusion
Article Abstract:
Fusion researchers gathered for a 2-week conference in Snowmass, CO, to try to push the field toward a consensus on scientific priorities. The field is notoriously fraught with division over methods and priorities, and though the meeting made some strides in overcoming divisions, there is still a long way to go.
