NAE strives to re-engineer itself

Liebowitz was elected NAE president in 1995 ahead of the governing council's chosen candidate, but removed in 1996 for alienating staff and damaging relations with the NAS. His successors will have to deal with his agenda of reforms and challenges to NAS authority over the National Research Council.

NRC pledges faster delivery on reports to government
Article Abstract:
National Academy of Sciences officials are making an effort to improve the efficiency its operating arm, the National Research Council. Increased efficiency could help the NRC attain work that had gone to the Office of Technology Assessment, which Congress abolished in Oct 1995.

Is the NRC ready for reform?
Article Abstract:
The NRC, which was founded in 1863 to give technical and scientific advice to the government, is under increasing pressure to become more efficient. Although many members see a need for reform, others are concerned that changes may undermine the council's independence.
