NIH, DOE battle for custody of DNA sequence data
Article Abstract:
The end of the biological computing partnership between NIH and DOE has resulted in two data bases for genetic research data. The National Center for Biotechnology Information at NIH will maintain GenBank, and DOE will develop the Genome Sequence DataBase.

Zeroing in on a breast cancer susceptibility gene
Article Abstract:
Researcher Mary-Claire King discovered that one gene is responsible for 5% of all breast cancers. Women with the defective gene have an 80% to 90% breast cancer risk. Identification of the gene could help to develop new methods of early detection.
