New Findings Point to an Abundance of Cellular Riches
Article Abstract:
The annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology featured new findings on Salmonella typhimurium, muscle proteins, and sperm. The Salmonella discovery involves understanding how the bacterium tricks cells into helping it via a bacterial protein called SipA. In other findings, the muscle protein titin was found in cell nuclei, where it may play a role in compacting chromosomes before cell division.

The complexities of conception
Article Abstract:
The molecular basis of spermatozoa's cell-specific recognition process is discussed. Study of the cellular mechanisms that control the interactions between sperm and egg could lead to the development of contraceptive vaccines and to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility.

Complexities in the treatment of autoimmune disease
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that there are difficulties in treating autoimmune disease by administering the responsible antigen to induce tolerance. In two studies administration of the antigen enhanced the disease process.
