Notch ductile-to-brittle transition due to localized inelastic band
Article Abstract:
The competition between the stress concentration caused by the notch and stress relaxation produced by inelastic deformation is used as a basis for studying the load-carrying capacity of a panel made of monolithic ceramic. Cooling or fastening in panels is effected by drilling off holes. These holes reduce the load carrying capacity of monolithic ceramic panels. The holes do not reduce the load carrying capacity of panels made of ductile alloys, as the stress is not concentrated. The load carrying capacity is not influenced by the shape of the bridging law and the matrix toughness.

High strain rate deformation and damage in ceramic materials
Article Abstract:
The dominant failure mechanisms in the conventional alpha-Al203 ceramics is identified by the plate recovery experiment. The identification enables the investigation of failure-resistant microstructures. Several experiments are conducted to determine the factors which enable the identification of the failure mechanisms. The best failure resistance can be determined for new, high-purity ultrafine-grain ceramics that are obtained by hot pressing of nanometer scale powders.

An interdisciplinary framework for the design and life prediction of engineering systems
Article Abstract:
The concept of interdisciplinary design that incorporates the synergies of several innovations of the scientific and engineering disciplines to achieve higher system level performance is discussed. The study delineates three steps consisting of knowledge, matrix, and the design for model construction for the engineering systems exemplified by the light bulb example.
