Nucleotide sugar transporters of the Golgi apparatus: From basic science to diseases
Article Abstract:
The biophysical studies using crystallography and NMR are used to elucidate the structure and mechanism of action of the nucleotide sugar transporters in the Golgi apparatus membrane. The biological studies in multicellular organisms using a combination of mutants, RNAi technology and chemical analyses of glycans are also used to shed some light on the role of these transporters and the particular sugars of the nucleotide sugars in normal and pathological development processes in the organisms.

Effect of carboxylate-binding mode on metal binding/selectivity and function in proteins
Article Abstract:
The effect of carboxylate-binding mode on the binding affinity and selectivity of a metal ion as well as the function of a metalloprotein is studied using [Ca.sup.2+] binding proteins and enzymes as examples. It is indicated that the metal-binding site affinity and selectivity can be fine tuned using carboxylate monodentate-bidentate switch, in addition to other structural factors, thus modifying the function/properties of the metalloprotein.

Four-center carbon-carbon bonding
Article Abstract:
Empirical and computational analyses were conducted to determine the intradimer bonding as a 2-electron-4-center (2[e.sup.-]-4c) C-C bonding interaction for [[TCNE].sub.2.sup.2-]. It was revealed that nonconventional bonding demonstrates distinct spectroscopic properties and is diamagnetic.
