OH radical reactions: the major removal pathway for polychlorinated biphenyls from the atmosphere
Article Abstract:
A simple model was developed to evaluate the significance of OH radical reaction as a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) loss process on a global scale. Rate constants for 14 PCB congeners with the OH radical over temperatures ranging from 323-363 K were measured. Total global loss rate of PCBs from the atmosphere due to removal by OH was calculated at 8300 t yr-1. Such a pathway is very large compared with other permanent PCB sinks, such as deep ocean sediment burial which was calculated at only 240 t yr-1.

Low-temperature microbial aerobic degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls in sediment
Article Abstract:
Principal components analysis of water-saturated samples of sediments contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) reveal that low-temperature microbial aerobic PCB degradation can occur in PCB-contaminated sediments. Loss of specific congeners was observed withn the top 15 mm of sediment while no loss of PCBs was seen in the deeper region of similarly treated sediment samples.
