Occurence and fate of the pharmaceutical drug diclonefac in surface waters: rapid photodegradation in a lake
Article Abstract:
Wastewater treatment plants have been found to be the major source of diclofenac in Swiss lakes and river bodies. Although the contamination is mainly attributed to human medical use, a substantial difference in the concentration level found along rivers was noted. In Greifensee lake, for instance, the diclofenac level in major tributaries was registered at 370 ng/L, compared to only 12 ng/L in the outflow portion of the lake. Results further revealed that the rate of photodegradation in the lake is influenced by the presence of sunlight.

Stereo- and enantioselective degradation in sewage sludge and soil
Article Abstract:
Chiral high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to analyze the degradation of the acetamide pesticides alachlor, acetochlor, metolachlor and dimethenamid in soil and sewage sludge. The results showed that alachlor had the highest rate of degradation while metalaxyl had the lowest. The degradation of metalaxyl, metolachlor and dimethenamid were both stereo- and enantioselective.

Occurence and environmental behavior of the chiral pharmaceutical drug Ibuprofen in surface waters and in wastewater
Article Abstract:
Researchers from the Swiss Federal Research Station reports that the presence of ibuprofen and its metabolites in waste can undergo biodegradation during sewage treatment. Water samples were analyzed using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.
