Metal speciation and bioavailability in contaminated estuary sediments, Alameda Naval Air Station, California
Article Abstract:
University researchers evaluated the metal speciation and hazards of contaminated sediments from the Seaplane Lagoon, Naval Air Station Alameda. Extracted metals, sulfides and toxic invertebrates were measured to measure the degree of concentration combined with x-ray spectroscopy.

Olfactory bulb uptake and determination of biotransfer factors in the California ground squirrel (Spermophilus beecheyi) exposed to manganese and cadmium in environmental habitats
Article Abstract:
The article includes statistics from measurement of California ground squirrel olfactory bulbs' contamination from manganese (Mn) and cadmium (Cd). Lab rats are used as a control group. The authors stress the importance of toxin transfer factors in the assessment of chemical exposure.

In situ spectroscopic and solution analyses of the reductive dissolution of manganese oxide by Fe(II)
Article Abstract:
Studying the reductive separation of manganese oxide by Fe(II) in simulated conditions of acid mine drainage is analyzed by using X-ray absorption synchrotron spectroscopy and a flow-through reaction cell. In affected natural environments by acid mine drainage complex intermediate solid phase formation on mineral surfaces that undergo reductive dissolution can influence the release rate of metals to solution.
