On the rocks
Article Abstract:
Norwegian government-owned oil exploration firm Statoil has developed a way to minimize the release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The solution, which combines expertise in the fields of engineering and geology, is to compress carbon dioxide to a liquid form which is then piped to a rig that pumps it into a natural aquifer made of sandstone rocks 800 meters below the bed of the North Sea. The company projected that the liquefied gas would not extend over three kilometers in any direction even after 20 years and that saltwater in the rocks would absorb up to 18% of the carbon dioxide.

Mr Cube
Article Abstract:
Joe Michael, a freelance software contractor, devised the idea of his shape-changing robots when he was a schoolboy and has spent 19 years perfecting the models and trying to convince the scientific world of their potential. Michaels has invested 75,000 pounds of his own money in patent fees, design development and marketing but has failed to interest serious investors in his invention. The robots, which involve a number of cubes moving over each other's surface to form new shapes, could have applications in defense, medicine and construction.

Article Abstract:
Several companies in the UK are developing techniques to maintain their dominance in the field of digital special effects. The Turing Institute in Glasgow, for instance, has developed a prototype full body scanner that can capture the image of an actor. Another is the media lab Createc in Earling which is developing software that can capture the expressions of actors and integrate these into their digital image.
