The invention of achromatic lens must be credited to Chester Moor Hall, who worked on the concept years before John Dollond came up with his own idea. As early as 1729, Hall conceived the idea of developing a pair of lens that would allow users to view objects with total clarity without color fringes.

A high-pressure water system was built near Paris, France, in the 1600s that provided a fountain at the Palace of Versailles. The device was eventually modified to make punch cards, and later modified again to rivet a ship. Modifications redesigned golf balls and led to the manufacture of abrasives.
