Out of control?
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency, regulatory agencies and other environmental groups need to cooperate with the government in strengthening environmental regulations by supporting the revision of land use restrictions, funded mandates for projects such as wastewater treatment and enhanced cost-benefit analysis in assessing and dealing with environment problems. The prevailing set of environmental regulations are perceived by the public to be deficient in quality, costly to implement and inefficient.

Seismic isolation in bridges
Article Abstract:
Seismic isolation bearings decrease earthquake damage by increasing the duration of vibrations in bridges. This mechanism decreases the forces produced by earthquakes. The technology involves installation of isolator bearing in place of the existing steel bearings. But the bigger expansion joints and larger displacement by seismic isolation can pose problems. Seismic isolators have been installed in many bridges in the US such as the Steel Bridge, St. Louis and New York State Thruway, New York.

A new era in transportation
Article Abstract:
The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 is a comprehensive law that will revolutionize the transportation industry. The bill grants more leeway on spending at the state and local levels and boosts financial support for a broad range of transportation and infrastructure projects, as well as anti-air pollution and decongestion programs. It also provides funds for research and development in the fields of magnetic levitation and intelligent vehicle highway systems.
