Seemingly random events are discussed that eventually led to the discovery of gasoline, the carburetor and the automobile. The first event occurred at Villa Deodati in Switzerland. While on holiday there with future husband Percy Shelley, Mary Godwin discussed the topic of making human beings from body parts.

Simon Stevin, a Dutch military adviser during the Renaissance period, is a musical genius who divided the octave note into different scales through the use of mathematical functions. Aside from being a wizard in decimal fractions, Stevin was a noted builder of sand yachts during his time.

A Hungarian, Lazlo Biro, invented the ballpoint pen in 1930, in time for it to be used extensively by Allied air force personnel in World War II. But Biro's invention depended on many factors, including the invention of ball bearings and of aniline ink.
