Overlays on deck
Article Abstract:
Engineers are considering polymer concrete for bridge-deck overlays. Its advantages include its thinness, impermeability, skid resistance and short curing time. A study aims to formulate standard specifications subject to the approval of the Federal Highway Administration. Virginia, California and New York currently use polymer concrete successfully in a number of projects although other states have not done as well with the material. Evaluations of past polymer concrete projects indicate that quality control, careful surface preparation and mixture of binders and aggregates influence overlay performance.

Plastic potential
Article Abstract:
Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) in the form of rebar and prestressing cables can replace the epoxy-coated rebar in the construction of bridge decks. FRP is durable, resistant to corrosion, lighter than steel, and is easy to transport. The FRP can be used in the construction of dams, concrete parking garages and piers. The ability of FRP to reinforce concrete is being tested, and a combination of FRP and steel reinforcement system, which will prevent corrosion of the steel core, is being built. The system will provide a mechanical bond to the concrete and more reinforcement strength.

Rail revival
Article Abstract:
US cities are eyeing railway transportation to improve current transport systems. Railways will help decrease oil consumption and pollution from car exhausts, increase passenger mobility and provide business opportunities along rail routes. The improvement of existing rails results in cheaper expenditures, less disturbance of urban activities, shorter construction periods and more environment-friendly projects. US transport authorities are hoping that these railway projects will eventually decongest cities and spread out the population.
