Panel urges NIH to loosen its grip on AIDS research
Article Abstract:
A panel composed of more than 100 scientists and community representatives issued a report after a year-long study of US AIDS research that recommends more independence from the National Institutes of Health. The panel recommended that nine new groups be established to aid in the transition.

Article Abstract:
An outbreak of monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of Congo is alarming some public health researchers. At least 92 cases have been reported, and the rate of human-to-human transmission is higher than normal. The usual transmission is from animals to humans.

The rise and fall of project SIDA
Article Abstract:
Project SIDA was launched in 1984, one year after the successful isolation of the AIDS virus. Although it ended in 1991, it was responsible for much of what is known about the disease today and may still provide valuable data that has yet to be exploited.
