Piles over problem sites
Article Abstract:
Pile foundations enable construction on unconventional sites, like swamps and landfills, but the use of this foundation type is now subject to regulation. Displaced material from pile-driving activities is banned from being disposed of in US waters under section 404 of the Clean Water Act. A permit has to be obtained from the US Army Corps of Engineers for this particular type of foundation work. These rulings now make it harder for structural designers to use piles in lieu of fill material to avoid the inconvenience of obtaining permit.

Spin-fin piles gain in application
Article Abstract:
Engineers are now using spin-fin piles in marina projects, the latest of which is the False Pass cargo dock in Alaska. These tension piles have the advantage of being able to withstand large tension loads thus effectively reinforcing the structure against seismic, ice and dynamic loading. These piles are also easy to install and have higher safe tensile loads than conventional piles. At present, only Alaska, California and Washington have used spin-files in their construction projects.

Contractor watches clock on bridge rehab
Article Abstract:
The rehabilitation of the Riva Road Bridge in Annapolis, MD, involved a performance-based contract with corresponding bonus-penalty clauses depending on whether McLean Contracting meets its stipulated construction deadlines. The project engineers used the 'lift-and-swap' method to install new prefabricated spans in place of the original ones. This served to maintain the use of the bridge even during construction. The bidding process reduced the rehabilitation project's projected cost.
