Predicting soil - water partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls by desorption with methanol - water mixtures at different temperatures
Article Abstract:
A method to determine organic carbon-normalized soil - water partition coefficients of 12 PCBs and 20 PAHs by desorption at different temperatures (20-80 degrees C) and in the presence of a cosolvent (methanol fractions of 0.1 - .09) was evaluated. Experimental design, materials and methods used, and results from the experiment are discussed.

Simultaneous elution of heavy metals and organic compounds from soil by cyclodextrin
Article Abstract:
The specific modified cyclodextrin, carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CMCD) was found to be effective in the desorption and elution of low-polarity organic compounds, such as phenanathrene and heavy metals, such as cadmium, in many types of soil. The activity of CMCD was tested on sandy aquifer material containing organic carbon and clay, on soils with high clay content and soils with high organic carbon content.
