Preparing for a pandemic
Article Abstract:
An influenza pandemic, by definition, occurs only when the influenza virus mutates into something dangerously unfamiliar to the immune systems and yet is able to jump from person to person through a sneeze, cough or touch. Steps taken in order to cope with this influenza include surveillance, vaccination, rapid response, and the treatment available to treat the sick patients.

What's in a Name? Not much at the moment, thinks biologist Kevin de Queiroz, but names could be made to reflect our modern understanding of life's origins and complexity
Article Abstract:
PhyloCode has been proposed by biologist Kevin de Queiroz and others to replace the system for naming organisms established by Carl von Linne in the 1700s. PhyloCode would group organisms based on phylogeny, or evolutionary relationships, rather than on shared characteristics. The scientific community has yet to adopt the method.
