Prevented prevention: treating sexually transmitted diseases may not restrain the spread of HIV
Article Abstract:
Empirical evidence suggests that treating sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to prevent HIV infection may not be an effective approach after all. This conclusion was based on the results of a community-based trial in the Rakai district of Uganda which found that significant reductions in curable STDs did not result in a decrease in HIV incidence.
