Priority concerns
Article Abstract:
The field of environmental sciences has to continue its efforts to understand scientific issues and to adapt to a changing regulatory environment. Local, site-specific solutions to environmental problems are becoming increasingly necessary as federal regulation declines. Some of the key challenges that need to be prioritized are groundwater contamination and the emergence of new diseases, ecosystem degradation and biodiversity, environmental health risks, reduction of exposures, carcinogenicity testing, remediation, pollution prevention, technological innovation setbacks and EPA budget cuts.

U.S.-Mexican environmental health concerns
Article Abstract:
Commercial relations between the US and Mexico have grown steadily closer since World War II, and this trend is expected to continue with the ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement. In 1991, the Mexico-US Committee on Occupational and Environmental Health was formed to evaluate and address occupational and environmental health issues arising from commercial relations between the two countries. The committee had its first meeting on Jun 4-5, 1992, and has plans to solicit support from industry, labor, trade associations and government in both countries.

Integration of coal utilization and environmental control in integrated gasification combined cycle systems
Article Abstract:
Research was done at Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Energy and Environmental Studies on integrated gasification combined cycle power systems. Specifically, the research examined the differences between hot gas and cold gas systems in terms of plant performance, emission levels and cost. The research found that hot gas cleanup achieved higher efficiency for lower cost than cold gas cleanup.
