Toxic Pfiesteria outbreak triggers federal-state research plan
Article Abstract:
The impact of the toxic form of the alga Pfiesteria piscicida has led several states and the federal government to develop a research plan on how to deal with the predator. The alga, a toxic dinoflagellate, caused the death of 30,000 fish in Maryland's Pocomoke River, and this led to the closure of three rivers on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. Other states having an interest on the toxic alga include Delaware, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

States tackle animal waste problem to improve water quality
Article Abstract:
The US has developed livestock waste management techniques for its animal production industry. Animal wastes from cows and poultry contaminate groundwater and rivers, which causes fish kills and degradation of the aquatic environment. Livestock waste management techniques such as nutrition management planning, the use of fences for cattle and best management practices (BMP) were developed to reduce manure spills into river channels.
