Three main protection schemes proposed by government, industry and university groups to hold back floodwaters from Category five hurricanes are presented. Engineers must come out with greater scientific input while considering the siting and construction of barriers-input that would control the Katrina disaster.

Drowning New Orleans

The severe risk of flooding of New Orleans is discussed. The high risk of flooding due to a hurricane-driven surge of sea water, the loss of natural sea and river defences, and the civil engineering measures needed to prevent such a disaster are explored.
