Removal of contaminants from saturated clay by electroosmosis
Article Abstract:
The removal of soil chemical species by electroosmotic purging and the dominant transport mechamisms involved in the process are studied. The evolution of the concentration profiles of clay samples saturated with solutions containing phenol or acetic acid were described in a transient multicomponent model and is compared with laboratory experiments. The efficiency of the decontamination process was theoretically and experimentally demonstrated.

Supercritical fluid extraction of bioaccumulated mercury from aquatic plants
Article Abstract:
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a new approach for removing bioaccumulated mercury from aquatic environments. The technique converts mercury into neutral, soluble metal chelates by in situ chelation with a ligand. Experiments that applied SFE on aquatic plants revealed that it removes metal ions directly from plan cellulose. The implications of this method in bioremediation research are discussed.

Contaminants in used lubricating oils and their fate during distillation hydrotreatment re-refining
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the main contaminants which can be found in preserved and unpreserved used oil samples as they pass through an oil management system. Results revealed that most oils have similar concentrations of polynuclear aromatics of metals such as cadmium, chromium and lead. Chlorinated solvents, however, varied widely in concentration, depending on where the samples originated.
