Resource recovery of waste fly ash: synthesis of zeolite-like materials
Article Abstract:
The feasibility of using fly ash from coal-fired power plants as a catalyst in the synthesis of zeolite-like materials was evaluated. Fly ash samples were processed with a caustic solution and subjected to a filtration process before they were oven dried at 105 degrees centigrade. Batch adsorption of cadmiun and copper onto fly ash and zeolites was then performed. X ray diffratction techniques were employed to monitor the changes in the crystallinity of the newly synthesized zeolites. Results indicate that temperature plays an important role in the fly ash-catalyzed synthesis of zeolites.

Performance and design of the availability test for measurement of potentially leachable amounts from waste materials
Article Abstract:
Test conditions of the availability test were identified to derive results for the discussion of the principles which form the basis of the test. The test is used in measuring the potential leachability of components from solid and in distinguishing between leachable substances and those expected to be retained in the matrix. According to a simplified model of the leaching by diffusion for each of the particle size distributions tested, over 80% leaching of the available fraction by an efficient diffusion coefficient of pD(sub e) less or equal to 15 can be obtained in the test.

Field investigation of the temperature distribution in a commercial hazardous waste slagging rotary kiln
Article Abstract:
The gas and bed temperature of the slag in a hazardous waste rotary kiln was determined by a series of experiments. Readings were taken using radiation pyrometers and thermocouples. The peak bed temperature was estimated to be 100-300 Kelvin higher than the kiln exit temperature and was measured at the middle of the kiln and not at the kiln exit. Visual observations and a comparison of the thermocouple and pyrometer measurements in different locations of the kiln are presented.
