Road to the future
Article Abstract:
The San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor in California received the American Society of Civil Engineers' 1997 Outstanding Civil Engineering Award of Merit. The 15-mile toll road, which opened in late 1996, cuts hour-long drives to less than 20 minutes during peak periods and features 58 new bridges, 10 interchanges and 11 toll plazas. The project was also financed through nonrecourse toll-revenue bonds and state funds rather than federal funds.
