Robocrops
Article Abstract:
Robotics, global positioning satellites and image processing techniques are being used in agriculture to develop tractors and robots to make the work of agricultural laborers more efficient. Modulaire of Finland has developed a driverless tractor using image processing and GPS technology in which the operator guides the machine remotely by tracking its movements on a video monitor. A new robot has been developed at Silsoe Research Centre, Bedfordshire, UK to pack horticultural crops. Cornell University in the US is developing a robotic grape pruner that uses computer vision.

Gearing up for change
Article Abstract:
The 1993 congress of the British Gear Assn dealt with problems and opportunities facing the industry. A formal code governing gear measurement and calibration should bring machines' accuracy closer to their theoretical performance. Abrasive wear in slowly running unlubricated gears is now predictable. One researcher proposed measuring in-service gear loading with inexpensive dynamometers; another described a system to improve profile deviations.
