Selenium removal by constructed wetlands: role of biological volatilization
Article Abstract:
Biological volatilization appears to be an effective way of removing selenium (Se) effluents discharged by oil refineries. Constructed wetland proved highly effective in removing Se from selenite-contaminated oil refinery wastewater, removing as much 89% of the contaminant. The mechanism by which Se was removed is through immobilization of the contaminant into sediments and plant tissues where Se concentrations reached -5 and -15 mg kg-1, respectively.

Temporally variable freshwater sources of dissolved chromium to the San Francisco Bay Estuary
Article Abstract:
Sediments within the San Francisco Bay Estuary appear to be the main source and a sink in the geochemical cycle of chromium, as evidenced by the presence of dissolved chromium fluxes in sediments. Direct anthropogenic chromium inputs are found to be small compared to the high-flow fluvial inputs but could be as large as low-flow dissolved inputs.
