Singapore showcase
Article Abstract:
A highway bridge constructed for the Singapore Air Force Training Institute has no piers and is the first structure in Asia to use wing-tip section with a curved and grooved soffit. The bridge's deck is separated from the pylon, and is supported by three pairs of back stay cables and nine corrosion resistant stays hanging from the pylon. Reinforced bored piles and pile caps with steel casings support the pylon. Prestressed diaphragms strengthen the girders. The construction of the bridge involved analysis using Softdesk software, making piles, building the pylon, casting the girder, fitting the stay cables, and lifting the deck up.

Seeking structural solutions
Article Abstract:
Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish designer, combines fine art, engineering and architecture in his designs for buildings and bridges. He uses small-scale models to demonstrate the geometric and structural principles of the buildings' designs that are both formal and fluid. Calatrava has won several awards, including the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Prize. The Lyon Airport Railway Station, Lyon, France; Trinity Bridge, Salford, UK; Alcoy Civil Hall, Alcoy, Spain; and Alameda Bridge and Metro Station, Valencia, Spain are examples of his innovative designs.
