Sizing up seismic bearings
Article Abstract:
Testing done by the Highway Innovative Technology Evaluation Center revealed that the performance of the eight tested seismic isolation bearings varies with load, temperature and environmental conditions. Seismic bearings allow a bridge's superstructure to move in relation to its substructure at a different frequency during earthquakes. They provide flexible support which lengthen the periods of vibration of bridges to reduce seismic response. They also have damping capabilities to control displacement across the flexible element.

Sizing up segmentals
Article Abstract:
Segmental concrete bridges are becoming popular alternatives to structural steel bridges. Based on studies, segmental concrete bridges have more competitive initial costs and longer life spans. They have minimal live load deflections and overload sensitivity, are not prone to fatigue failure and are fire-resistant. They also have their own aesthetic appeal and are sturdy, anti-corrosive and create less problems during construction in terms of delivery, adaptability in crowded sites and environmental effects.

Article Abstract:
Steel has proven to be a more reliable material for bridges as compared to concrete whose durability is still debatable. A well-designed steel bridge is structurally sound and facilitates easier and cheaper construction, inspection and repairs without reducing its strength or lifespan. The development of innovative protective paint systems and the recyclable nature of steel are additional assets for this dependable material.
