The viability of the missile defense systems being developed by the Pentagon remains to be an issue. A perceived threat was causing the Pentagon to develop the systems without considering their viability. BMDO's Theater High Altitude Area Defense missile program has just failed.

The US Army has discovered that inexpensive, unmanned balloons called aerostats can detect cruise missiles earlier than can ground-based radar. Fiber-optic cables transmit data about the missile's position to the ground.
