Soluble problems
Article Abstract:
Researchers believe that molecular computers, which perform biological computing and calculations similar to electronic computers can be developed. The so-called DNA computer hardware with DNA logic gates could possibly tackle problems such as the Hamiltonian path problem which conventional electronic computers cannot solve. The logic gates can detect specific fragments of the genetic blueprint as input and splice together the fragments to form a single output.

Turning the tide
Article Abstract:
The medieval city of Venice is turning to new technology to save its buildings from the problems associated with pollution and erosion. The European Union and other organisations have provided backing of over seven million pounds sterling to support the Thetis consortium, formed in 1992 to preserve the city's fabric. A wide range of modern technology is being used to combat problems such as land subsidence, water pollution, erosion and a rising sea level.

Carriage return
Article Abstract:
Europe's engineering companies are developing new approaches to ensuring rail safety. Among them is Oldham-based Ferranti Technologies which has developed its Bridge Guard which can be fitted to steel or iron bridges and detect direction and frequency of any impact. The device should help Railtrack reduce its infrastructure maintenance costs and cut service disruption for train operators.
