Sorption of chlorophenols to wood pulp
Article Abstract:
Chlorophenols are formed during bleaching of wood pulp. Adsorption of these compounds to pulp fibers is affected by the presence of inorganic ions, cosolutes and colloidal material. Experiments to develop mathematical models of the fiber-water transfer of chlorophenols reveal that sorption of chlorophenols to the solid phase is directly influenced by the concentration of colloidal materials. It is also slightly dependent on temperature and inorganic salt concentrations.

Reactions of dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran with electrophilic reagents
Article Abstract:
Research has aimed to identify reagents to destroy dibenzo-p-dioxin (DBD) and dibenzofuran (DBF) to reduce the production of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran during chlorine bleaching of pulp. Tested reagents included ozone, nitrogen dioxide and hydrogen peroxide. Ozone proved most successful in destroying DBD and DBF. Nitrogen dioxide reduced levels but hydrogen peroxide was ineffective.

Degradation of dibenzodioxin during chlorine dioxide bleaching of Kraft pulp
Article Abstract:
The bleaching of pulp produces chlorinated organic compounds. Dibenzodioxin (DBD) can contaminate pulp. A study of the distribution and reactivity of DBD during Kraft pulp bleaching revealed that aqueous solutions containing chlorine dioxide produced rapid degradation of DBD, but semi-bleached pulp increased the stability of DBD. This indicated that the sorption of DBD reduces reactivity.
