Source functions for pools of solvent
Article Abstract:
One cause of groundwater contamination is a spill of dense chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) solvents. The steady-state dissolution from pools of solvent in the subsurface was studied. The vertical dispersivity was obtained for the dissolution of trichloroethylene in a model filled with sand, and very slow dissolution from CHC pools was observed. The results suggest that long-term control measures would be more effective than short-term solutions for areas with CHC-solvent contamination.

Modeling contaminant plumes from fingers and pools of solvent
Article Abstract:
One common source of groundwater contamination is chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) solvents. Analytical transport models were used to study why groundwater concentrations of CHCs tend to be low even when liquid CHC solvent is found in the saturated zone. The results indicated that CHC solvent that is present below the water table has a tendency to form stagnant pools on top of an underlying aquitard or on top of layers with low permeability.

Clean quartz
Article Abstract:
Relevant gas/solid partitioning factors with field-determined values were compared to determine the relative value of adsorption to particle surfaces against absorption into organic material to model relative humidity. Adsorption to mineral/oxide surfaces such as clean quartz did not yield vital results for setting Kp values in urban air analysis. Adsorption to mineral surfaces exhibited value for rural/remote air masses.
