Stimulation of microbial degradation of methyl bromide in soil during oxidation of an ammonia fertilizer by nitrifiers
Article Abstract:
The use of an ammonia-based nitrogen fertilizer to soil may enhance biodegradation of the fumigant methyl bromide during the nitrification of bacteria. Specifically, the liming and application of the fertilizer and inoculation of the ammonia oxidation bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea can stimulate MeBr degradation in soil. As a consequence, the rate of MeBr flux into the atmosphere may be minimized following fumigation.

Government officials call for relaxation of methyl bromide ban
Article Abstract:
Top officials of the Clinton administration are asking for a relaxation of the ban on the fumigant methyl bromide claiming that farmers will suffer from the drastic phase-out. Manufacturers in the US are mandated by the Clean Air Act of 1990 to halt production of methyl bromide by Jan 1, 2001. Methyl bromide was found to be one of the chemicals that cause the depletion of the ozone layer.

Measurement of atmospheric methyl bromide using gravimetric gas standards
Article Abstract:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology has developed a set of gravimetric gas standards to measure the concentration of gaseous methyl bromide in the atmosphere. The results showed that the standards were comparable with that at the ppb level and in excellent agreement and stability. The standards can be prepared at highest accuracy using aluminum gas cylinders.
