Stopping strokes: drugs in development may protect the brain from harm
Article Abstract:
Scientists have found that drugs for ischemia may minimize brain damage by protecting neurons against excitotoxicity, a process wherein overactive proteins poison cells, causing cell death. They can also be used to mitigate brain damage arising from Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy and head trauma.

Recent studies indicate that there may be a biological basis for the greater susceptibility of women to mental depression. Testing showed that when asked to feel sad, women exhibited much greater activity in the anterior limbic system.
