Stressing masonry's future
Article Abstract:
Post-tensioning techniques in masonry provide a cost-effective structural framework for building applications. This technique is based on Swiss building codes which increases the lateral road requirements and disallows the use of the concept of tensile strength. Horizontal construction can be achieved by building the horizontal members vertically. The technique maximizes the durability of the designs while it minimizes their maintenance. Strengthening of a 104 year old church which was damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake is discussed.

Quality check
Article Abstract:
The article examines the apparent enigma about relying on fiber-reinforced polymers as construction materials not tested for quality using approved performance standards. Currently, the quality assurance and control of fiber-reinforced materials are ensured using the International Conference of Building Code Officials criteria.

Polyurethane coatings help masonry resist blasts
Article Abstract:
It is found that the addition of even a single layer of polyurethane to a masonry structures can significantly enhance the blast resistance of that structure. Although testings did confirm that polyurethane and combinations of polyurethane and fiber would help to strengthen the walls, no optimal thickness was determined.
