Superpave implementation: full speed ahead, or go slow?
Article Abstract:
The Federal Highway Administration and state department of transportation personnel, and industry representatives are pragmatic about the superpave implementation but are critical of the implementation speed, its complexities, and cost. They are reluctant to implement the superpave system due to its newness, and a lack of knowledge of the aggregate sources for the project. Rich May of the Asphalt Institute, Lexington, points out towards a training program to bridge the gap between implementation and mix design.

Pulling ahead
Article Abstract:
Consulting engineers should develop good business relationships with clients to establish what the customers really want before requests for proposal can be written. The increasing competitiveness of environmental consultants and most other technical practitioners necessitate the practice. Learning the true selection criteria and the most important information about the client helps consultants gain a competitive advantage over their competitors.

High-speed impact echo
Article Abstract:
Engineers at Olson Engineering have developed a high-speed scanning system for impact-echo analysis of concrete slabs and nondestructive testing of underground concrete pipes. The system features special impact-echo sensors and impactors which are capable of responding to a thickness change as small as 0.1 inch. The proposed system has been tested using an elevated floor slab and buried precast conccrete pipes with satisfactory results.
