Surface complexation of aluminium on isolated fish gill cells
Article Abstract:
The use of isolated gill cells from the largemouth bass allows the influence of added ligands (F, DOM) on aluminium binding on the surface of fish gill cells to be assessed as part of a study of rising geochemical mobility of aluminium in certain watersheds with thin soils as a response to environmental acidification. A number of aluminium solutions were used to investigate the metal binding potential of the gill cells in the presence of acid, and results showed only a small reduction in aluminium complexation at the gill surface when both aluminium and iron were present. This is probably the result of the formation of a mixed ligand complex.

Organic solutes and the recovery of a bog stream from chronic acidification
Article Abstract:
Organic solutes appear to have no effect on the recovery of brown water streams from chronic anthropogenic acidification in the Czech Republic. Results show that only 10% of the sulfuric acid and sodium bicarbonate added to a bog stream were neutralized by the protonation or deprotonation of carboxylic functional groups. The results support previous findings that suggest the limited effect of natural organic acids to acid neutralization even in organic-rich waters.

Oil field hydrogen sulfide in Texas: emission estimates and fate
Article Abstract:
Hydrogen sulfide appears to be the most abundant reduced sulfur gas present in the oil-producing regions in selected west Texas counties. Sulfur gas emissions were found coming largely from crude oil storage tanks. Sulfur dioxide and mercaptan levels below 200 pptv were detected except in areas where oil refining and processing plants are located. Results indicate that most of the emitted sulfur end up in the alkaline soil.
