Tales of concrete past
Article Abstract:
The history of reinforced concrete and excerpts from engineer Anton Tedesko's lecture are presented. The development of concrete started in the 19th century when Frenchman Joseph Monier used iron mesh to overcome concrete's weakness in tension. The technique of reinforcing concrete has been fully developed in Germany and is now widely used as a major building material.Meanwhile, Tedesko recounts his experiences in using the material in some of his projects. He believes that the best structures are produced by the personaleffort and vision of experienced people.

Cascading aeration
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has been testing aeration techniques for purifying water since 1960. From a barge mounted device to instream aeration and diffused air in the 1970's, the demand for a better aeration system has made them recognize the simple, effective and sightly method of plunging water from sharp crested steps into deep pools to aerate water. The new system has enabled the meeting of the state's dissolved oxygen standards, at the same time providing a venue that would be appreciated aesthetically by taxpayers.

Smart structures
Article Abstract:
Researchers are developing ways by which structures would be able to to report their structural conditions and alert humans of impending failure. The most promising way of making a structure smart is to embed it with sensors, particularly fiber-optic ones. To prove the veracity of this instrumentation technique, two structures, a building and a power plant are fixed with fiber-optic networks in their concrete walls. With these developments a call for research is made, specially in the analysis of data gathered from such projects.
