Teaching real science
Article Abstract:
Pre-college education in science and mathematics is in need of urgent reform. Classes are too large, teacher training is inadequate, essential supplies are not provided and textbooks are uninteresting and full of errors. Proposed educational reforms are evaluated.

Brain drain: hard times for science in the former Soviet Union
Article Abstract:
Due to lack of funding, scientific research in the former Soviet Union is falling apart. Many institutions stopped paying salaries in Dec 1991 and have no hard currency to maintain equipment. Senior physics researchers earn less than bus drivers.
