Technology and politics mix at TRB meeting
Article Abstract:
The Transportation Research Board Meeting held last Jan 1993 in Washington, DC, discussed the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA)'s role under the Clinton administration's policy of prioritizing infrastructure and environmental concerns. The ISTEA has recently revised its transportation management policy by giving more responsibility to metropolitan planning organizations and emphasizing environmental aspects of transportation projects. Other topics included monitoring hazardous waste shipments, uses of intelligent vehicle highway systems and an evaluation of magnetic levitation systems.

Epoxy-coated-rebar debate still going
Article Abstract:
The debate on the effectiveness of epoxy-coated rebars continues even after the court dismissal of the Kenneth Clear vs Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) case last Oct 1992. Clear and CRSI representative Theodore Neff both participated as panelists during the Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington, DC, in a session called 'Epoxy-Coated Rebar for Reinforced Concrete Structures.' Clear reported the dismal performance of epoxy-coated rebars in northern marineand deicing salt conditions while Neff expounded on preventive maintenance and quality control of the material.

Futurists and engineers meet in Orlando to discuss transportation's future
Article Abstract:
The Third Annual World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems, involving civil engineers, and members of industry and government, held discussions on the future of transportation. The conference was held in Orlando, Florida, during Oct. 14-18, 1996. The convention involved technical sessions on crash avoidance, trajectory and driver psychology. The engineers discussed the futility of building more infrastructure. The improvement of safety and throughput with existing highways and roads requires attention.
