Nobel laureate Gunter Blobel donated his winnings from the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to the organization he founded to help reconstruct the Frauenkirche church destroyed by the Allies in 1945. The biologist had been dazzled by the beauty of the church's dome when he was an eight-year-old child.
