Geneticists had thought E. coli or haemophilus influenzae would be the first completely sequenced genome, but Genome Therapeutics Corp claims to have accomplished the feat for helicobacter pylori, a bacterium responsible for peptic ulcers. The firm's wish to keep its data private obviates their claim to genetics history.

Uganda enlists locals in the battle to save the gorillas
Article Abstract:
The mountain gorilla population that resides in Uganda's Bwindi-Impenetrable Forest, which numbers an estimated half of the 600 known mountain gorillas, is now being protected by an innovative conservation program. The program boosts the local economy by encouraging gorilla-related eco-tourism.

WHO calls for action against TB

WHO has released a report entitled, 'Stop TB at the Source,' through which it hopes to spur an international effort to contain the growing worldwide tuberculosis epidemic. The report advocates greater use of the Directly Observed Treatment - Short-course (DOTS) therapy.
