Several researchers have created methods that can kill the deadly E. coli bacteria in meat. The use of lactoferrin, a milk protein, prevents E. coli and other bacteria from attaching to meat, while a genetically engineered bacteria is ingested by an animal that kills the deadly bacteria in the body.

Monoclonal antibody research progressed well in the 1990s at Cell Genesys and GenPharm, and when the two companies agreed to share their research results to end opposing lawsuits, both companies were producing mice that created monoclonal antibodies. Use of the antibodies is examined.

A toxin against pain

Prialt, a synthetic copy of a toxin from the Magician's cone snail, Conus magnus, a mollusk from the Indo-Pacific region, is one of the first pharmaceutical that demonstrates the promise that marine life, particularly invertebrates, holds for drug developers. Scientists made attempts to understand the way ion channels function in the nervous system and how these toxins might be deployed in neuroscientific studies and drug development.
