The pesky zebra mussels
Article Abstract:
Zebra mussels are prolific mollusks that provide a bad taste in drinking water as they also clog the intake pipes of power plants and other industries. Although water filtering occurs when mussels are in search for food, their removal of plankton algae threatens the fish and waterfowl food chain. The introduction of oxidizing biocide through the diffuser in the intake pipes and the utilization of recirculating heated water are suggested as innovative means of controling mollusks in water supply systems and in power plant intake lines, respectively.

U.S. and Mexican pesticide standards: similarities and differences
Article Abstract:
Government regulation of pesticides in the US and Mexico differ in a number of ways. For example, both countries register pesticides and establish tolerance levels for pesticide residues, but Mexico uses information from other countries in making its decision, while the United States does not. Tolerance levels may differ between the countries because of climatic and soil factors. The US government monitors produce imported from Mexico, while the Mexican government relies on inspection by the private sector.

On-site screening
Article Abstract:
The EPA's Superfund program is an expensive and inefficient government effort to clean hazardous and toxic waste from polluted areas. Much of the program's inefficiency is due to its reliance on fixed analytical laboratories rather than on-site testing. Aside from lower cost, on-site testing provides real-time data. With on-site testing, personnel can obtain immediate information and thus have a basis for decisions right away.
