Measurement of the axial residual stresses using the initial strain approach
Article Abstract:
In this article an alternative method for measuring axial residual stresses is proposed. Results demonstrate that the original residual stress can be determined from the initial strains detected on a specimen removed from the original part.

Residual stresses and fracture mechanics
Article Abstract:
Compressive residual stresses and surface flaws cause considerable reduction in the tensile strength of conventional glass samples. The inverse problem of measuring residual stresses using fracture mechanics leads to an experimental method which bears a significant edge over the traditional residual stress measurement methods. The experimental results are quantified on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The crack closure under the impact of surface compressive stresses is discussed.

The single slice method for measurement of axisymmetric residual stresses in solid rods or hollow cylinders in the region of plane strain
Article Abstract:
An innovative procedure can be utilized in measuring axisymmetric residual stresses in a solid rod or hollow cylinder in the plain strain region and such method can also be used in thick-walled cylinders. The procedure involves making a complete traverse cut, mounting a number of strain gages and making another traverse cut which is parallel to the first one. By using this procedure, the residual stresses can be measured from a fractured shaft with an elastic deformation.
