Vertical lasers take aim at new - and colorful - targets
Article Abstract:
Motorola has introduced the first vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), which emits near-infrared light from the top of the chip, instead of the edge, making it more usable in dense arrays. VCSELs for other wavelengths are proving difficult to manufacture. Fabrication techniques and problems are described.

Training lasers to be chemists
Article Abstract:
Coherent control utilizes laser pulses to coax molecules into reacting in ways that will produce the desired product. Researchers have made advances in this technique with the use of computer controlled feedback that calculates the most effective pulse for a particular reaction.

Plastics may add new colors to lasers' light show
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed a variety of plastic films that produce a laserlike beam. The polymer lasers have the potential to create a wider range of colors across the visible spectrum than beams from inorganic materials.
